Jaroslav Vacek původně studoval indické jazyky (tamilštinu, sanskrt, hindštinu) a angličtinu (1960–1965). Původně vyučoval sanskrt a tamilštinu a indickou jazykovědu.

Publikace

Vedle několika monografií o otázkách indické a mongolské jazykovědy a literatury J. Vacek přispěl řadou článků k tématu vztahu drávidských a altajských jazyků a k otázkám symboliky přírody v klasické indické literatuře (tamilská a sanskritská). Napsal řadu učebnic (několik ve spolupráci s indickým a mongolskými kolegy, viz níže) a překládal do češtiny prozaické texty a klasickou indickou poezii. Editor mezinárodního recenzovaného časopisu Pandanus (Nature in Literature, Art, Myth and Ritual; http://iu.ff.cuni.cz/pandanus/publications/), a spolu-editor mezinárodního recenzovaného časopisu Mongolo-Tibetica Pragensia (původně Mongolica Pragensia; http://ujca.ff.cuni.cz/UJCA-202.html), oba vydávané Ústavem jižní a centrální Asie.
