The Learned Society Launches This Year’s „Jiřina Michlová Award for Doctoral Students“
The Learned Society of the Czech Republic is pleased to launch the second annual Jiřina Michlová Award for doctoral students, recognizing outstanding original scientific work.
Eligible submissions include scientific articles, student theses, or studies created specifically for the award.
The financial prize accompanying the award is funded by a donation from the eminent chemist Prof. Josef Michl, a foreign member of the Learned Society, who passed away in May 2024. The award is named after his daughter, who tragically succumbed to cancer at the age of 27.
Applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral program at a Czech university at the time of application or have completed such a program up to one year prior. Each applicant may submit only one entry per year.
The primary evaluation criteria are the originality and the applicant’s contribution to the submitted research work.
Applicants should submit a single original work (not a collection of works) in PDF format via email to the Learned Society’s Secretariat: ucena.spol@kav.cas.cz.
The PDF must include the following:
- Student Identification: full name, email address, university, and field of study
- Title and Abstract of the submitted work
- The Submitted Work: scientific article, student thesis, or study created specifically for the award
- A Brief Popularization Summary of the original work, written for a general audience
- An Expert Evaluation of the work from a specialist in the relevant field (e.g., the applicant’s supervisor) detailing the student’s contribution to the work. The evaluation must include the evaluator’s identification information and signature.
The application deadline is January 31, 2025.
A committee of the Learned Society will select the laureates of the Award based on nominations from the four scientific sections of the Learned Society of the Czech Republic. The committee will submit the selection proposal for approval to the plenary session of the Learned Society in March 2025. Each year, a maximum of two awards are granted, with one award prioritized for proposals from a specific section of the Learned Society – this year, the Biological and Medical Sciences Section.
The awards will be presented to the laureates at the General Assembly of the Learned Society on May 19, 2025.
